ASTA, Sabre Applaud DOT, Push For Fee Disclosure Rule |
|
The American Society of Travel Agents and Sabre each added their voices of support for the U.S. Department of Transportation's stated plan to further regulate disclosure of airlines' optional services and associated fees. In issuing a final rule on various elements of airline customer service, DOT indicated that later this year it would propose another rule requiring disclosure of such fees "at all points of sale."
ASTA praised DOT's set of overall rules, but noted "two important exceptions," including the delay on the issue of fee disclosure in such channels as global distribution systems. "The department did not adopt rules that require the airlines to share optional fee information in a transactable form with travel agents," according to the group.

SWABIZ and EarlyBird Check-In |
|
You may now purchase EarlyBird Check-In via SWABIZ within the same transaction or booking path when purchasing an AIR reservation. EarlyBird Check-In provides automatic check-in, better boarding position, and earlier access to overhead bins. SWABIZ will automatically check you in and assign your boarding position within 36 hours of your flight's departure - that's 12 hours before general boarding positions become available. While EarlyBird Check-In doesn't guarantee a boarding position, it improves your seat selection options to help you get your favorite seat.

Travel Leaders Closely Monitors Travel Alerts |
|
On May 1st, the U.S. State Department issued a Worldwide Travel Alert – which is less serious than a Travel Warning – because of "the enhanced potential for anti-American violence given recent counter-terrorism activity in Pakistan." On advice of the State Department, we recommend that U.S. Citizens register their international travel plans at https://travelregistration.state.gov.
Please know that Travel Leaders closely monitors the U.S. Department of State Web site for travel alerts as well as the more severe travel warnings for all destinations, including those that are most popular with our clients. Should we become aware of an issue for a specific destination, we alert clients who may be planning to travel there so they can determine for themselves if they still wish to travel. And, if we become aware of an issue where a client is located, we will try to immediately contact the client to check on their well-being and work to assist them if they require alternate travel arrangements.

New Airlines Rules Favor Passengers |
|
The Department of Transportation recently introduced a number of initiates to reimburse fliers with lost luggage, bumped flights and fine carriers for long tarmac delays. Effective August 23, airlines must refund baggage fees if luggage is misplaced (up to $50).
Also, passengers bumped from flights are entitled to compensation of twice the price of the ticket up to $800 if the passenger is delayed two hours or less.
Those who have longer delays after being bumped can get up to $1,300 -- double the current amount. Another rule fines foreign carriers if they hold passengers on a plane for more than four hours at a US airport.
Airlines must either take off or return to the gate. Click here for detailed information.
